CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a magical place. At the area size of over 52 000 km squared, it has a diverse desert environment life form. Beneath the surface lies so many secrets, some known and some yet to be discovered. Even when it becomes scorched and dry and desolate towards the end of the dry season, the subsurface of the soil is brimming with life, anticipating the first drops of rain that will transform it into a lush wonderland of colors, green grasses and new life almost overnight. Each plant and animal have evolved its own special technique to survive. Most plants have underground bulbs and tubers to survive the dry season, and in turn, they provide nourishment and moisture to animals and other life in the area. During the summer rains, the northern part of the central Kalahari game reserve is one of the prime game viewing areas in Botswana particularly the Deception Valley, as the nutritious grasses growing on the valley floor attract herds of animals that attract predators. During this time, there is also abundance of predators.
Wildlife: Gemsbok, Springbok, Hartebeests, Lions, Cheetahs, Jackals, Bat Eared Foxes, Brown Hyenas etc.
Birdlife: Birdlife is among the best in the region.
Landscape: The rain clouds struggle to penetrate the high-pressure system which commonly occurs over arid areas. This result in the most dramatic and beautiful clouds formation- the perfect backdrop for an ecosystem that contains many unexplored corners and many undiscovered secrets.
Valley: Deception Valley makes the northern reserve a must visit area for its scenery and arid life forms that transforms from time to time due to the struggle of survival.
History: Stone Age people were the first inhabitants of the Kalahari. The San people followed and have lived here for perhaps 30 000 years, pursuing a hunting and gathering lifestyle well into the 20th century. The reserve was established in 1961 to protect the natural resources on which the San’s hunter-gatherer lifestyle depended.
