Savuti is part of Chobe national park located on the western part. This forms a very attractive part of Chobe due to its uniqueness. The area is known for several attraction features in some film documentaries (The lion of darkness, The forgotten river, all by Dereck and Beverly Joubert, National Geographic films), The Savage kingdom among others.
The Attractions includes:
Paintings: The rocky outcrop that features human inhabitants, in the form of paintings, probably the Kalahari bushmen that followed migration of Zebras and wildebeests from the central kalahari to the north since bushmen were nomadic hunters. This migration still takes place even today. The bushmen painting in Savuti is also linked to the painting at Tsodilo Hills further west of Savuti.
The Savuti Marsh: This is an open plain in Savuti that attract many plains animals. The marsh saves as the deposit site for water that flows along the Savuti River forming a large marsh estimated to be more than 7 kilometers squared.
Savuti River: This is a spillway of water from the Linyanti river system. The spillway serves a life pulse by filling the marsh when the river flows and attracts a large biomass of life. The Savuti channel that serves as a link between the Linyanti river and Savuti marsh is linked to tectonic plate movement namely the Great Rift Valley, situated in Linyanti and this is estimated to restrict the flow of water along the Savuti River through to savuti. There is upward and downward movement caused by the plate holding the water back when it is up on the Savuti side and keep the river dry for so many years. There might be other factors leading to this long drying up of the river and when the river is back, it is for only a very short time (less than 7 years). Savuti seems a desert environment when the river is not flowing but becomes a paradise when the river is back.
Sand Ridge: There is also a sand ridge in Savuti, significant of the Ancient Super Lake Makgadikgadi that formed a very large area. This feature extends for about 100 kilometers North-Southerly direction along the western part of Savuti.
Wildlife: Savuti has the largest concentration of predators in a very small area. The migration of Zebras and wildebeests is still taking place in Savuti through to Linyanti (South-North) from around March-April and back (North-South) from around October-November almost yearly. Savuti is one of the best breeding places for African Wild dogs. Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Elands, Gemsbok, Cheetahs, Leopards, Lions are also found. It is one of the areas where prides of Lions hunting elephants has been documented.
