History: Khwai area is inhabited by the Banoka or River Bushmen who were probably the first inhabitants of Moremi Game Reserve. During the 1930s to 1940s, the Banoka, who now live at Khwai village along the Khwai river, moved south from a place called Gudikwa (northern Okavango), where part of the Banoka people is still found, to Xakanaxa in the Moremi area. These people (Gudikwa and Khwai) still visit each other on foot even today, interestingly is the distance between these two communities which is about 100 kilometers or more. In approximately, 1950s, they moved to Dombo Hippo Pools from Xakanaxa. With the establishment of the Moremi Game Reserve, these people were asked to move to the periphery of the reserve, so establishing Khwai Village on the northern part of Khwai river that forms the boundary between the reserve and the Khwai Conservancy that is managed by the Khwai Development Trust, the Khwai village trust. The development trust manages the Deed trustees for the community that includes campsites, lease agreement signatory with tour operators and so on. The Deed was registered in 2000 with the aim to benefit the community.
