Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

This is one of the historic places forming part of the Ancient Lake Makgadikgadi (Sowa and Ntwetwe) Salt Pans, that attracts large number of Flamingoes in the rainy season where they breed. These Pans includes Sowa pans on the eastern part and Ntwetwe pans on the western part. The government realized its value as a conservation and tourists’ area, it was declared a game reserve since the villagers were grazing their livestock inside the boundaries. In December 1992, the boundaries were extended and given a national status. The Park is known for its:
Pans: These pans (Sowa and Ntwetwe) were once connected to the Okavango River forming a very large Ancient Super Lake Makgadikgadi. There are clear evidence linking the area to the so-called Okavango River.
Wildlife: The area host one of the large migration of Zebras and Wildebeests that takes place seasonally from Nxai pan to Makgadikgadi pans in the dry season (Mar-Jul) and from Makgadikgadi Pans to Nxai Pans in the rainy season (Oct-Dec). One can see quality sighting of Lions, Cheetahs, Zebras, Giraffes, Wildebeests etc.
Birdlife: In the rainy season, Birdlife is among the best in the region including migrants and reduce to residents’ birds as soon as the migrants go back to North Africa and Eurasia just before winter starts.
A Tailored arrangements can be organized to go to the camps outside the park namely Jacky’s Camp and San Camp (famously known for Meerkats). These camps also offer Bushmen Cultural experiences including Bushmen walks conducted by the Bushmen.
History: The famous Chapman Baobab are located in this area. The Makgadikgadi pans have supported humans and their livestock for a very long time. There is evidence at Lekhubu Islands of stone age tools. During the mid-1800, the Makgadikgadi pans area became increasingly important as a major trade route. It all began when David Livingstone (Explorer) announced the existence of Lake Ngami, which at the time, was brimming at the edge of the lake (North western side).
